My first experience working in 3D space can be traced back to the numerous hours using valve's Hammer Editor to create Counter Strike Global Offensive custom maps. Although many of the maps went unfinished, it was a great time and I learned alot about how to work in 3d environments, and most importantly how to optimize, due to how old the Source Engine really is. Many of the maps I had experimented with would often boast a very unconventional level design. Despite still following the basic level design such as popular maps like dust2, I had tried different ideas, such as an inverted 'Vertigo' style map where the attacking team started above the defending team. Overall it was a great experience and really what got me into 3d graphics.

The Abyss

By far my most ambitious project with over 5000+ lines of code written by myself, The Abyss . This project taught many things, such as how to write Opengl code from scratch, designing and implementing graphics pipe lining. There was so many techniques tried, implemented changed, that its difficult to cover, for example I had implemented cascaded shadow mapping, and then afterwards changed the entire render pipeline forcing a rewrite. A side branch of this project was a separate GUI library GUI library I had also coded from scratch. I had found there was a distinct lack of usuable C++ GUI libraries, so in typical C fashion I tried to code my own. This project has taught me so much, that even if I never finish it, the time spent learning so many fundamental graphics ideas was worth it. I wrote a good doc covering some of the implementation.

Music Synthesization using Neural Networks

For a grad class at Simon Fraser University, I got together with a group of students to study music synthesization using neural networks. I was lucky enough to be tasked with taking existing neural networks and expanding on them, so for our project I took an existing repository and modified it to allow for more complex rhythms which can be seen here . The results were very interesting as we managed to get pieces of music that very closely resembled randomly generated songs, however there was abit of overfitting. Our finding are summarized in a report. Examples of the output music are here and here.

My first real attempts at small coding projects were my game jams. Ive done quite a few so far, and in the gallery you can see them, as well as all 4 of them are available for download here. These games range from simple brick breaker games, to more complex puzzle platformers and action games. My favourite game that has ever come from a game jam i've made is Echo through the Aztec. The main mechanic in that game functioned very similarly to that of portals momentum conservation, and it was by far the most fun to playtest and mess around with. One day I've had thoughts of basing an entire game around that mechanic as it felt really satisfying to learn and mess around with. Most of these game jams were done in 72 hour and done with a friend, or a small group of friends, and were some of the most stressful, yet enjoyable memories.
